From what I remember they are samurai detective novels kinda along the lines of the Sano Ichiro series or the series by Dorothy Hoobler(Ghost of Tokaido Inn, Demon in the Teahouse, In Darkness Death, etc.) except that the I.J. Parker Books take place in 12th century Kyoto instead of 17th century Edo.
